Why this matters

Public input in city decisions can help officials make decisions that are well-informed and representative of the population. Feedback may also help identify flaws, improve public understanding of the subject matter and build trust between the city and its constituents.

The city of San Diego is hosting public forums between August and early September to gather feedback from residents on the implementation of a new trash collection fee.

These “open house” forums are open to all San Diegans and are being held in each City Council district from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The first forums took place Monday night at the Logan Heights Library.

In 2022, voters passed a controversial amendment to a law in the city of San Diego, known as the “People’s Ordinance,” that now allows the city to begin charging many residents for the trash collection services they’ve been receiving for free.
